Description
The permeability (K) of disturbed samples of sand and imported fill can be quickly and easily measured using the ETC Simplified Falling Head Permeameter Kit manufactured by Dynamic Monitors, a business unit of Engineering Technologies Canada Ltd. (ETC).
The ETC Simplified Falling Head Permeameter Kit is based on the device and methodology outlined in the Nova Scotia Onsite Technical Guidelines. ETC has developed a user-friendly kit and guide which can be used in the field, or in the lab. This permeameter kit is most appropriate for testing clean “fast” sands which are very permeable. The range of hydraulic conductivity (K) values that this test device is appropriate for is in range of 1E-06 m/sec (3 inches/day) to 8E-03 m/sec (27,000 inches/day) which generally applies to coarse sands to silty sands.
Note: Fill/soil containing significant amounts of silt and clay, i.e. more than 15% passing the 75um (#200) sieve, is not recommended for testing using this device, as erroneously low permeability results may be obtained. This is due to the “fines” going into suspension, then settling out and creating a hydraulically limiting layer.
